Question: 08-14 Code Section: 7 Date: 10 May 2008

OBC 2006 Reference: 7.2.11.2., 7.2.7.4.

Question: Recently a question has arisen concerning the use of Type L soft copper for use in fire service mains. 7.2.7.4. says both, Type K and L soft copper can be used in a water distribution system. In Table 7.2.11.2., the chart only mentions Type K. Our question is ‘Why Type L soft copper is excluded from Table 7.2.11.2. ?’

Interpretation: The trouble with Type L goes way back to the times when flared joints were a common method of connections. Type L would not flare well without splitting. 7.2.7.4. is for "the distribution system" and 7.2.11.2 refers to "service pipes“. Therefore, the restriction for Type L as a service pipe is identified in the body of the code in Table 7.2.11.2. The new Code requires only Type K for services.....ALL services... not just fire mains as the question mentions. Also take note of the requirements of 7.2.9.2.(4) for joining of copper underground.

Interpretation: Approved at AMES 2008
